![]() ![]() It’s a short book anyway, but I read it in less than a day because I could not put it down. That was all I needed to hear to be honest, and I wish I had read it as soon as I received it. The first thing I heard about What Moves the Dead was that it’s a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe. I was given an advanced readers’ copy of this book by Tor Nightfire via NetGalley. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.Īided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all. What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania. What Moves the Dead is Kingfisher’s retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Genre: Horror, Fantasy, Gothic, Retellings ![]()

![]() ![]() Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead. They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. He also recognizes that absolute selfishness, like that exhibited by Tom Sawyer to a small extent, and that exhibited by Tom’s much worse prankster-counterparts, the duke and the king, is both juvenile and shameful. He learns that rigid codes of conduct, like Christianity, or like that which motivates the Grangerson and Shepherdson’s blood feud, don’t necessarily lead to good results. He has a good heart but a conscience deformed by the society in which he was raised, such that he reprimands himself again and again for not turning Jim in for running away, as though turning Jim in and prolonging his separation from his family were the right thing to do.Īs the novel develops, however, so do Huck’s notions of right and wrong. Huck begins the novel as an immature boy who enjoys goofing around with his boyhood friend, Tom Sawyer, and playing tricks on others. ![]() Adventures of Huckleberry Finn belongs to the genre of Bildungsroman that is, the novel presents a coming-of-age story in which the protagonist, Huck, matures as he broadens his horizons with new experiences. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Act of Succession was nailed to the door of every parish church in the country, and the clergy were ordered to preach against the pretensions of the pope they were forbidden to speak of disputed matters such as purgatory and the veneration of the saints. ‘Taletellers’ and ‘counterfeiters of news’ were to be apprehended. The clergy were asked to supervise their parishioners, and the local justices were supposed to watch the bishops to see if they ‘do truly, sincerely, and without all manner of cloak, colour or dissimulation execute and accomplish our will and commandment’. It was God’s law, against which there could be no appeal. In every schoolroom, and from every pulpit, the virtue of obedience was emphasized. However, Bull and Teeny had the most instalove relationship that quickly became sexual and just as quickly became, in my eyes, emotionally abusive. I understand that Alexa Riley (probably) wrote this novella because they were purposely trying to write a ridiculous story and just wanted something entertaining. Thick follows Teeny, an 18 year old virgin who is moving into her first apartment, and Bull, who is a VERY LARGE man and never leaves his apartment because oh my gosh did you guys know he is so BIG. I’m sorry to say that as much as I enjoyed the hosts and the conversation they had during the episodes, I really didn’t like this book at all. I went through a rough patch where I was having trouble sleeping and so I listened to a couple episodes and the book they were reading was Thick by Alexa Riley. ![]() This is one of the rare books that I read as an audiobook because I listened to it via the Read Me Romance podcast. ![]() ![]() ![]() Storylines is one of the most rewarding aspects of his job.
